My 6 Degrees of Separation with Sam Heughan

Judging by the search terms being used to find my blog, it appears as if people are VERY interested in Sam’s personal life.  I haven’t written about it in the past, but I think it is time to address the topic.

As I’ve said in past blogs, I understand his appeal.  Believe me, I really do!  He’s an interesting person.  I’ve written about him in this blog, and I’ve tagged him in posts.  I enjoy reading your search terms on my blog, it gives me ideas for other things to write about in my posts.  I don’t know who is doing the searching, some appear as unknown search terms. The search terms make me laugh and smile.  One of my favorites was “Sam Heughan climbing”.  Usually, this is the way it works, Sam Heughan and …

Sam Heughan and My Peak Challenge

Sam Heughan and Bear Strength Clothing Co.

Sam Heughan and F1ght Camp

Sam Heughan and Outlander

However, lately, I am becoming increasingly more uncomfortable with the search terms used to hit my blog.  I have a Twitter account, and I have tweeted trying to be funny, but to be very honest, I don’t think his personal life is any of my business.

Given search terms just used to hit my blog, I think too much attention is being paid to #SamHeughan‘s personal life. #ya‘llknowilove2readthem

Not suggesting either would need to participate in such a show, but can you imagine the number of applicants?

Jenny Mc ‏@jennymcinspired  19 hours ago

Reading people’s blog search terms lately feels like I’m playing some sort of weird game of 6 degrees of separation w Sam Heughan.

Here’s a sample of what I’ve been seeing in past weeks:

Sam Heughan and … I can’t even bring myself to type the name. I see this multiple times every day.

Did Sam Heughan and ??? recently get married?

I don’t know.  If so, I would happily send wedding gift.

… Instagram account

Sam Heughan and just the first name of person.  Pretty familiar if you ask me.

Finally, just the name of the person without Sam Heughan.

I haven’t met Sam. I’ve never talked to him.  He hasn’t responded, favorited, retweeted any of my tweets, which is fine by the way.  I don’t search for information about his personal life, but it is being provided to me in the form of these search terms.  It makes me feel, well, creepy.  I now know more about him than our current dynamic of Actor/Fan warrants in my opinion.  What do I do with the information?  Nothing.  I am not looking at people’s Instagram accounts.  I am not following people on Twitter that I have no reason to be following.

I believe he is entitled to a personal life.  My impression is that he values his privacy, and is a shy person. I consider myself a shy person, but my husband says I could talk to a tree.  Speaking for myself, I worked to overcome shyness.

Sam has asked very politely to respect his private life.  In his own Twitter post on April 26, 2015, he says, “and because someone is on social media, does not mean their life should be “mined” or dug up.”

I actually replied to this tweet with,

Jenny Mc ‏@jennymcinspired Apr 26

@SamHeughan 1 thing 2 be in public eye, quite another to be under a microscope I would imagine. Sam, thanks for all you do!

Having experienced this feeling of being under a microscope, I can tell you it’s not a pleasant feeling.  Granted, being a teacher is not the same as being an actor, but I have been the subject of conversation while parents burned up the phone lines or sat on the sidelines watching their children play soccer.  I cannot fathom what it would feel like to have thousands of people tweeting and posting about me on a daily basis.  Don’t even get me started on searching for information about people’s friends and family.  I will now step off of my soap box.

I love talking about Sam Heughan.  Many people are talking about Sam Heughan.  Check out this article by Keely Flaherty, http://www.buzzfeed.com/keelyflaherty/we-need-to-talk-about-sam-heughan#.ygrRmLPRp.  We can talk about the items mentioned in this article, but can we also talk about his acting ability?  Can we talk about his brave performances in episodes 115 and 116?  Can we talk about the fact that he should win an Emmy for his work?  Can we talk about how inspiring he has been to so many people?  Can we talk about My Peak Challenge?

I must admit that I now stop and think every time I enter something into a Google search. Can we talk about the other interests that have shown up as search terms on my blog…

Reflections on Episode 116

I don’t usually post about the specific episodes on my blog because my point of view is going to differ from others because I am seeing the episodes from my own lens.  By nature, opinions are going to be subjective. I responded to a tweet last night right after I watched the episode, just finished watching, overcome with emotion. Want to say more, hopefully coherently, can’t right now. The tears didn’t start to flow until after I watched the entire episode.

Truthfully, I watched episode 115 two weeks ago with a Crown and Coke in my hand, tissues, and chocolate.  My husband also watched the episode with me.  For episode 116, not for any particular reason, I didn’t have any of those things.  I sat cross-legged on my bed watching the episode clutching a pillow in my lap, shouting, “No! No! No!” at my TV.

I expected to feel heartbroken, sadness, despair, and sympathy.  I did not expect to feel anger.  Anger at the characters, anger on behalf of the actors portraying the characters.  Anger at the show runners for making the decision to go as far as they went with the material.  I am still sitting with the anger.  I need to percolate about that more.

Through all of these emotions, I also could not help but feel proud of the actors and show runners.  I read the book three years ago.  I knew what was going to happen, what needed to happen.  I cried when I finished reading those chapters in the book.  When I started watching the show in August, I wondered how the actors were going to prepare for these episodes.  I don’t have any acting experience, I haven’t taken any drama classes, I don’t have any frame of reference, but I watched something so brave on my television screen last night.

My husband didn’t watch this episode, but asked me, “Are you so upset because it happened to Sam?  Would you be so upset if it was someone else playing Jamie?”  In answer to the first question, I said, “No. Yes.”  In answer to his second question, I said, “No.”  My hope is to explain coherently, so let me clarify.  I was so upset because it was happening to Jamie.  Sam is Jamie in this show.  Sam’s performance, not only the delivery of the dialogue, but the emotions conveyed on his face affected me so much that I couldn’t sleep for hours.  I don’t think another actor could have brought the sensitivity he brings to the material, so therefore in my opinion, no, I wouldn’t have been so gutted if another actor played those scenes.

Something that resonates with me about Sam as Jamie is the fact that he is a good listener.  Access Hollywood has done two interviews with or about Sam Heughan that are my favorite interviews that I have read or seen.  In the September 2014 interview with Jolie Lash, Sam says, “There was one show I was doing — there was a woman… she was a fantastic actress and she had a quite emotional scene and I used to go down like half an hour before my call and just sit in the wings and listen to her, and I’d love, somehow, the sound of people listening. There’s something about the silence of people listening to someone, or watching someone — I just… I love that.”  Read the entire interview at http://www.accesshollywood.com/outlander-getting-to-know-sam-heughan_article_99012.  Duncan Lacroix did an interview with Access Hollywood where he describes Sam, “He’s a very good actor at listening”.  Read more at http://www.accesshollywood.com/outlander-qanda-duncan-lacroix-on-murtagh-fitzgibbons-fraser_article_107390#BtlEVUxPI5rYHXhs.99. I feel this quality brought so much depth to those scenes.

I started to reread Outlander at the end of the first half of season one.  I still haven’t finished the book.  They have gotten married in my reread, and I thought about skipping to the Wentworth chapters to prepare myself.  I didn’t, but after I watched the show last night, I reread the last chapter, “From the Womb of the Earth”.

I am Catholic, again my lens, and I sat during Mass this morning thinking about the show and books.  Coincidentally, the Mass centered on the Feast of the Holy Trinity.  I was reminded of Diana Gabaldon’s piece “Jamie and the Rule of Three.”, http://www.dianagabaldon.com/other-projects/the-cannibals-art-how-writing-really-works/the-cannibals-art-jamie-and-the-rule-of-three/.  I was soothed as I thought of Jamie and his motivation for his actions.  The scenes in the show regarding Claire’s confession were beautiful to watch.  The message of second chances and redemption so powerful.  I was left feeling grateful and thankful.

I am grateful and thankful for a show and books so amazing that they make me think, feel, and try to empathize and sympathize with others and the challenges in their lives.  I will be thinking about episodes 115 and 116 for many days, weeks, and months to come.  I started writing this blog in October because I was inspired by the words in the books and the writing in the adaptation on the television screen.  I feel so appreciative of the journey that I have taken due the blog.  It is gratifying to stretch my brain in a different direction, and I am so thrilled about the opportunity to meet new people because of this experience.

Caitriona Balfe, Tobias Menzies, and Sam Heughan all deserve Emmys for their performances last night.  The whole cast and crew deserve Emmys for their work and dedication to the show.

Thank you so much for reading!

Beth-Topper

So, the dust has settled a bit on Episode 15 and folks are girding their loins for 16 because EVIDENTLY those critic/reviewers’ warnings forgot to mention that episode 16 is just as harrowing as 15.  (Way to suck us in with the light at the end comment) Anyway,… ( she says while adjusting the gird loining, which we all know can chafe a bit) what I’m still thinking about today are the performances. Which is what I think most people are still thinking about today…those performances! I was as staggered by the acting as I was by the visceral story that was unfolding on my screen.

I know there is this common belief that a viewer really shouldn’t notice the acting because if you do then somehow your disbelief didn’t get suspended.  Maybe that’s true, but I’m pretty sure I bought what they were selling!  My appreciation occurred upon reflection. Like…

What’s in the Peak Posse Basket? Love, Generosity, Creativity, and Hope

On November 7, 2014, I wrote, Sam Heughan’s fans are very creative, clever, committed, entertaining, funny, industrious, loving, and loyal.  I had the pleasure of speaking to Bonnie Terbush Thursday morning.  She is a shining example of one of those fans.  Bonnie is the Administrator of a Facebook Group called The Peak Posse.  During the course of actor Sam Heughan’s My Peak Challenge, The Peak Posse decided to raise funds for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research by raffling an Outlander inspired Gift Basket.  The Gift Basket consisted of over 60 donations, including autographed items. Within five weeks, the raffle raised in excess of $25,000.00 US Dollars.  By day, Bonnie is an Anti Money Laundering Investigator.  By night, she is in Basket Mode, “I call it Basket Head,” she says, “I commute, and as soon as I get off the train, I go into Basket Mode.”

Bonnie is now focusing her fundraising efforts to raise money for World Child Cancer, Caitriona Balfe’s chosen charity.  The current Gift Basket raffle began on 4/1/15 and ends at 8pm ET on 5/31/15. The winner will be announced at 8:30pm ET.  Bonnie says, “The efforts are a group collaboration.  I really appreciate everyone’s help!”  The World Child Cancer organization has been very involved. As of today, the basket contains the following items:

To enter the Gift Basket raffle, just follow this two-step process.

  1.  Donate to World Child Cancer, interested parties may donate to the following site: https://www.justgiving.com/cmbthepeakposse/.  Donations to “The Peak Posse Just Giving page in support of World Child Cancer” are being generously matched by Macquarie, the employer of Heather Lee Ying, a member of The Peak Posse.  In order for the match to occur, the following statement must be included within the donation message “In support of the fundraising efforts, The Peak Posse/Heather L.Y.”
  2. As a Thank You, donors may enter to win the Gift Basket raffle in support of World Child Cancer at https://www.rafflecopter.com/rafl/display/7c3e22082/?

Bonnie also created Ten Dollar Tuesday.  Every Tuesday is Ten Dollar Tuesday. Here are the directions:

  1. Donate a minimum of $10.00 to https://www.justgiving.com/cmbthepeakposse/.
  2. Guess a number from 1-200.
  3. In the donation description include your Twitter name, #TenDollarTuesday and your best guess (number) and the matching statement “In support of the fund raising efforts, ThePeakPosse/Heather L.Y.”
  4. The numbers closest to the winning number on either side, will win a set of Jamie and Claire note cards by The Animated Life (they’re in the Gift Basket).

Additionally, individuals are invited to ‘Like’ the Outlander-The Peak Posse Fundraiser page on Facebook in order to follow our fundraising endeavors, https://t.co/urR4OfjHvb.

I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with Bonnie last week.  One thought especially has stayed with me.  She said, “The opportunities I’ve had since I created this Facebook group are incredible…because of one book series and television show.  I’m awestruck by people’s generosity.  The support is overwhelming.”  I couldn’t agree with her more!  Sparkle on, Bonnie!

A Cookbook inspired by Outlander

When I started blogging in October, I did not know where my journey would take me.  I joined My Peak Challenge in January, and posted about my adventures.  My Peak Challenge, Sam Heughan, and Bear Strength Clothing Co. continue to be the most popular topics searched on my blog. I am happy to be in a place where I can create a buzz about all the positive activities surrounding Outlander and its stars.

A cookbook is being compiled to raise money for Sam Heughan’s charity Beat Blood Cancer and Caitriona Balfe’s charity World Child Cancer. We would like recipe contributions from all over the world. We are asking for favorite recipes from stars, friends, family, and fans. See below for instructions to submit your recipe.

Disney On Ice presents Let’s Celebrate!

We look forward to the arrival of spring at our house because it means two things; Spring Break and Disney On Ice skates into Jacksonville.  I was very fortunate to attend the “school show” of Disney On Ice presents Let’s Celebrate! on Friday.  I found this description of the show on the Disney On Ice web site, www.disneyonice.com. It’s one colossal party on ice, with all your favorite Disney friends at Disney On Ice presents Let’s Celebrate! Presented by YoKids Organic Yogurt. Join Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald and Goofy as they celebrate a Very Merry Unbirthday Party with Alice and the Mad Hatter; a Royal Valentine’s Day Ball with your favorite Disney Princesses, including Cinderella, Ariel, Belle and Tiana; a Hawaiian luau with Lilo & Stitch; a whole new world with Jasmine and Aladdin; a winter wonderland with Woody, Jessie and Buzz Lightyear; a Halloween haunt with the Disney villains and more in a magical medley of holidays, celebrations and festivities from around the globe. Come join the celebration you’ve been waiting for when Disney On Ice presents Let’s Celebrate! skates into your hometown!

Both my son and daughter really enjoyed the show which featured over 50 characters. I loved seeing my daughter excitedly point out her favorite characters to her aunt as they glided on the ice. winterwonderland

At the end of the show, we watched a special Behind the Scenes presentation which was tailored specifically for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. I was just as interested as my children. I have grown up watching the Disney On Ice Shows.  The production value of the shows is phenomenal.  Some of the skaters returned to the ice to demonstrate more of their skills, and give the children a peek into the set up of the show, the costume department, sound department, and the electrical department.  As a teacher and Girl Scout Troop leader, I would definitely recommend the “school show”.  The field trip groups were very well-organized. 2015-04-10 12.29.30 (2)

Fun Facts:

15 stage hands set up the arena 1 and 1/2 days prior to the first show

10,000 LED lights are used during the show

120 giant Clay Paky lights are set up around the ice

45 loads of laundry are washed by the costume department

36 skaters in this show from nine countries speaking 12 languages

37 countries are toured

I was curious to see if Scotland was one of those countries, and the answer is yes.  Click on http://www.disney.co.uk/disney-on-ice/landingpage/ to find tour dates and information. Disney On Ice presents Let’s Celebrate! will be at the Jacksonville Veteran’s Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, Sunday, April 12th.  There is a 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. show.  For more information, go to http://disneyonice.com/ticket-info/Lets-Celebrate!/49.

Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

sisterhood

I would like to thank Susan Kicklighter, my Twitter friend and writer, for tagging me for this Sisterhood Blog Hop. Check out Susan’s blog at http://www.writing4kix.tumblr.com, to find out more about her and the projects she’s working on.  Follow her on Twitter @writing4kix.

The rules for this blog hop are:

  • Link your blog back to the blogger who tagged you
  • Post the Sisterhood logo in your blog post
  • Answer the 10 questions you were asked
  • Nominate up to 10 bloggers to answer 10 questions of your choosing

I am thrilled that Susan tagged me for this blog hop.  I love to read, and I have been told I write a lot, and talk a lot.  My friends sometimes say, “Don’t get her started about books; she’ll go on and on.”  I pinned the picture below on Pinterest via Misty Star.  It can be found on http://www.eatsleepreadlove.wordpress.com.  I have been waiting for the right blog to post it.

eatsleepreadlove

Below are my answers to the questions Susan asked in her Sisterhood Blog Post. Enjoy!

1. What’s your least favorite book?

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides is my least favorite book.  Callie discovers she is a hermaphrodite, and I felt that she was portrayed as a freak.  I wanted to know more of the history of her grandparents and the setting of the story as the author took us from the Ottoman Empire to Detroit and the Motor City.

2. What’s your favorite book from childhood?

There are so many it is hard to choose.  The ones that came to mind are Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls, The Once and Future King by T.H. White, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, and The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart.  I read all four books in her Arthurian Saga.  The story continues with The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment, and The Wicked Day.

3. What author(s) inspired you to become a writer?

I would like to thank Diana Gabaldon and the writers of the television series Outlander.  I started my blog because I was inspired by the Outlander book series and television series on Starz.  Reading is second nature, but it never occurred to me before October to write anything.

4. How do you feel about eBooks?

kindlebw kindlefire

I read books on my Kindle and “traditional” hardback and paperback copies. I think I have read more books because of the eBook format than I would have if I were reading only hand-held copies.  I could spend my whole paycheck on books. I have discovered new authors through the “Free Book” feature on Kindle.  However, I would like to offer some tips I’ve learned along the way as my Kindle is now a constant companion.

Pro Tip 1 – A Kindle Fire’s graphics are so much more detailed and prettier than the basic Kindle.  My husband received a Kindle Fire for his birthday one year, and I was happy with my original black and white version.  When I downloaded Accidentally Married…to a Vampire, by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff, I honestly couldn’t see the thumbnail version of the picture on the cover.  My husband said, “What are you reading?” as he showed me a picture of a shirtless man who could be Fabio’s twin on his Kindle Fire.  Oops!

Pro Tip 2 – Do Not share a Kindle account with your husband.  Between vampires and grey silk ties, I answered the question, “What are you reading?” frequently.  Unfortunately, my husband’s device suffered an untimely death, not by my hands.  He chose not to replace his, and I am the proud owner of a Kindle Fire.

5. Are you a compulsive reader or do you take your time getting through the story?

When I read, I read every word.  I don’t usually skip ahead in the story.  If I’m really interested, I increase my pace.  I’ll reread if I think I missed something important.

6. Which book(s) have you reread the most?
I started rereading Outlander to get ready for the beginning of season 1B which will air April 4th on Starz.  I read the first three books in the series three years ago based on a friend’s recommendation.  I’ll reread in order before moving on to the rest of the series.  I’ve also reread all of the books in the Twilight series.  I really enjoyed The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.  I reread that book as soon as finished it the first time.

2014-Outlander-TV-cover-140x214

7. If you could live in any world depicted in a book, what would it be?

One choice would be 18th Century Scotland with Jamie Fraser.  As evidenced by my response to question 2, I would also like to be transported to Camelot.

8. If you could kiss any book character, who would it be?

Obviously, I would kiss Jamie Fraser.  I must quote Diana Gabaldon from Outlander, “Where did you learn to kiss like that?” I said, a little breathless. He grinned and pulled me close again.  “I said I was a virgin, not a monk,” he said, kissing me again. “If I find I need guidance, I’ll ask.” As Jamie is Claire’s, I am also intrigued by Eric Northman from Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series.

9. Do you communicate with your favorite authors on Twitter?

I follow Diana Gabaldon, @Writer_DG, she is so witty.  I would also recommend following Denise Grover Swank, @DeniseMSwank.  I am a huge fan of her books, and was so surprised when she followed me back.  I’m always looking for new books to read so I follow several authors on Twitter.

10. If you could have dinner with four literary characters, who would you choose?

I would be thoroughly entertained at the dinner table if Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, Skeeter from The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and Vivi Abbott Walker from The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells joined me for the evening.

I know I am only supposed to nominate 10 bloggers, but I now nominate any sister bloggers to join me in this Sisterhood blog hop by answering the questions above on their blogs. I love talking about books, and getting recommendations for new books to read.  I look forward to your responses!

Thanks for reading!

Reaching For The Ring

Life Preserver by cncphotos Life Preserver by cncphotos

I was out in the ocean of self-doubt, drowning in the negative thought process. Silently slipping under continuous waves of comparison, self hate, and loathsomeness.  Silently losing faith, not finding bottom, I was taking my last gasp for air and the sharks had begun to circle. During a break in the waves, Sam Heughan dropped me a life-preserver. I decided to grab onto that precious ring of hope and hold on with every ounce of strength and self-preservation I had left.  Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” This has become my motto for My Peak Challenge. What do I lose compared to what I might gain? I must leave this ocean of mine to find out.

Before the rescue party heads off into the sunset attending to their own lives, I would like…

I asked her via Twitter’s Direct message how she felt about the amount she has raised for the charity Beat Blood Cancer and this is what she had to say!

Feeling the need to repent, I decided to do 20 minutes of cardio, a combination of walking and jogging guided by my Wii fit.  I was pleasantly surprised by the results.  The first time I tested I walked/jogged 1.9 miles (approximately 3057 meters, if http://www.metric-conversion.org is correct) in 20 minutes.  Tonight, I walked/jogged 2.9 miles (4667 meters) in 20 minutes.  I’m not sure how accurate Wii fit really is with results, but I was pleased.  I only burned 129 calories, maybe the two cookies?

For those of you suffering from Preschool story withdrawal, I’ll give you a snap shot.  We had a low of 28 degrees in North Florida today, too cold for the four-year old children that I teach.  Inside Recess was required.  “Chicken Fat” was requested, and the CD I have has a music track of the same 6 minute 29 second routine.  Second time through, I let them pick what exercise they like the most.  They asked, “Mrs. Mc, can you do a sit up?”  Of course!  I started to demonstrate, and one of my little boys rushed over to hold my feet.  He was so cute!  I said, “Someone at your house must exercise.”
I received the My Peak Challenge pack yesterday.  Thank you Bear Strength, F1ght Camp, and Sam Heughan for the inspiration!

All of the participants of My Peak Challenge are amazing!  The sense of community, positive attitude, strength, and tireless energy to work together towards the common goal to Beat Blood Cancers are awe-inspiring to me.
